Chicago gets sneak preview at Diverse Voices in Docs

Diverse Voices in DocsWe’re just hours away from the big celebration of the first class of graduating fellows from Diverse Voices in Docs (DVID) 2013, and I’m so excited. As one of the filmmakers selected to be a part of this 6-month professional development and mentorship program by Kartemquin Films and the Community Film Workshop of Chicago, I had the privilege of developing Intuition (formerly World Class Learning) with the guidance of some very talented filmmakers, and will continue to receive ongoing advice.

Tonight, host Robin Robinson (FOX 32) will be presenting a screening of short excerpts of works-in-progress by each fellow, at the event held at the University of Chicago’s Logan Center.

Team Intuition submitted a clip that first explains how 12 year olds in Singapore are streamed based on the results they score in the major Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), and then introduces feisty teacher Meixi Ng and one of her students by weaving their interviews together. It ends with an open invitation to join us as on an intimate journey as we spend the 2014 school year with Meixi and her students. (We might be able to embed the clip here in time to come.)

I’m disappointed I am unable to be physically present at the celebration with my fellow graduating DVID classmates, and will be sending my best wishes from sunny Singapore. I know I’d be so proud to see how far we’ve all come, and have no doubt that our audience will be impressed by the quality, depth and diversity of all our projects.

Congratulations to the Diverse Voices in Docs graduating class of 2013: Camille S. DeBose; Darryl Pitts; Derek Grace; Grantlin Banks; Heather Charles; Jesus Mario Contreras; Jonathan Ashley Amsterd; Junko Kajino; Kelly Pope; Pamela Sherrod Anderson; Philister Sidigu; Raymond Lambert; Ronnie Reese; Shahari Moore; Shuling Yong; Tony Williams; Tracey Scruggs Yearwood; and Zia Nizami.

Huge thanks to Kartemquin Films, the Community Film Workshop of Chicago, and all DVID supporters for making this program possible. Looking forward to meeting the next batch!

Cheers,
Shuling
